Author Submission Guidelines
For Rio Nuevo Publishers
Rio Nuevo Publishers welcomes agented and unagented queries and in the following nonfiction subject areas specific to the West and Southwest:
- History and folklore
- Cooking and cuisines
- Native American culture, history, artifacts, and spirituality
- General Trade nonfiction specific to the region
- Tourism and travel
- Art, artists, architecture, and decor
- Memoir and biography
- Photography
- Environmental interest
- Natural history, wildlife, gardening, nature
We request that prospective authors query first, including a brief description of the subject, proposed length of the work, and any previous publications or credentials that particularly qualify you to write on a particular subject.
Please include complete contact information. Please do not send email attachments. When sending queries by mail, if you want your materials returned to you, include an SASE, otherwise we will recycle your submission and reply by email. If we are interested in your book, we will contact you requesting a complete proposal or manuscript. If we have not responded in one month from the date of your query, please feel free to submit your work elsewhere.

For Rio Chico, Books for Children
Rio Chico (a children’s imprint of Rio Nuevo) is happy to consider agented and unagented submissions that fit into our mission of publishing quality children’s books with a Southwestern or Western theme. We are looking for fiction and nonfiction that fit into the categories below:
Picture Books (Ages 4–8):
- Original Southwestern/Western-themed stories
- Southwestern/Western twists on traditional tales
- Regional folktales
- Southwestern/Western stories with wide appeal
- Interesting, kid-friendly non-fiction about the region
- Fresh, concept-driven board books
Complete text is required for all submissions, including ideas for illustration if necessary to understand the text. Please copy the manuscript into the body of the email. Do not send attachments. Children’s submissions may be sent via email to theresah@rionuevo.com.
